Every summer, my homegirl and I always take a few days of vacation to reset, refocus and unwind. We usually pick where we want to go in the first quarter of the year, and go in Mid-June. This year, prices were super expensive, and to fly somewhere in the U.S. was ridiculously priced with plane tickets starting at around $700. So instead of just sitting vacation out, we opted to take a road trip to Austin, TX, and we had such a great time!
This trip was more of a leisure trip where we just kicked it and ate really good.
Accommodations
We decided to stay in the heart of downtown since most of the activities we did were down there. We stayed at the Hyatt House Austin/Downtown. You do have to pay for parking/valet and it’s a pretty good fee per night. I did like that you could text the valet when you were to go and they would bring the car around.
Our room was super nice. It looked like a one-bedroom studio with a city view of downtown. The room was equipped with kitchenware and basic stainless steel appliances. Also, the bed was super comfy and made for a great night’s sleep. We stayed for 4 days and 3 nights. Overall, I really liked this hotel and would stay here again. Our stay was a bit pricey, just FYI.
Food Spots We Tried
I’m a foodie, and so is my homegirl. We were very into finding really good food spots. We enjoyed most of the spots we tried, with one or two just being ok.
This is a Mexican restaurant in the heart of downtown Austin, TX. It’s a female-owned restaurant that is super cute inside (think IG-worthy photos and blogs) but has great food. They give you large portions of food and the drinks have a KICK! (They do not skimp on the liquor) Something to note is they do not take reservations.
If you like Italian food and wine, you’ll love this spot. The food was amazingly good, and they gave you a pretty good portion of food. I had one of their meat-lover pizzas and my friend tried their noodles (which were so good.) The service was really good here as well. I’d definitely eat here again.
This spot is at the tip-top of 6th Street and is lowkey a hidden gem. We stopped in to have a late lunch here and to our surprise, it was so GOOD! We got spinach dip as an appetizer, which was good, and ordered some drinks. The drinks were ok and could have used more of a kick. I got a bacon cheeseburger and fries, and it was really good. Not everyone can make a good burger but they did.
My friend and I had lunch here, and honestly, I was not that impressed. I didn’t think it was that good. It’s more of a fresh and healthy food spot so if you’re into that, then you’ll really like it. I do suggest making a reservation if you go.
If you like doughnuts or need something sweet, this is the spot for you. I absolutely love doughnuts and if I’m in the area, try to stop in here. There’s usually a line because it’s a pretty popular spot. So be prepared to wait.
Things To Do
While we were here, we didn’t get into too much. We went to a Black Arts Festival which was super dope. We got a chance to see and shop Black Owned Businesses, see Black Art, and try something new. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
We also hit up a rooftop, the JW Marriott Austin. They have light bites (I recommend eating before you go) and drinks. There’s a beautiful view of downtown Austin that is breathtakingly beautiful, especially at night. If possible, I definitely recommend making a reservation so you don’t have to wait.
There’s so much to do in Austin, TX and this doesn’t even scrape the service. This is just what my friend and I did on our girl’s weekend getaway! I hope this was helpful, and if you try any of these places, let me know.
